Surprise! The Faster You Drive, the Less Time You Save

Slow down — you really, really don’t need to go that fast

Imagine this: someone wants you to stay in a room for around 70 minutes; that’s the rule and you just have to do it. The room is not too bad, and you can listen to music. If you want to sneak out of the room before the time is due, it’s against the rule, but you can — you just have to pay some prices and/or take risks.

First, you need to pay around $3 to $4, there’s no way to avoid it. And if you get caught sneaking out, you’ll have to pay up to $100 or more.

Second, if you get out earlier, there’s a chance you might die. That’s just the way it is. How likely? At least 17%, but might be as high as 50% or more. Seems not much? Maybe, though some other people in another room(s) might die with you too. And if other people are in the room with you, they might die too.

Actually, even if you don’t die, you might either end up being fed through a tube and/or becoming paralyzed. That, in some way, might be worse.

So how much earlier can you get out of the room? Exactly 7 minutes 30 seconds.

Is it worth it? I’m not sure: you only save a little more than 10% of the time, but risk 20% or more to be killed, not to mention you have to pay more…
